On the Wings of a Wild Thing is my third solo album, although in reality it is less of a solo effort and more of a collaborative one:  the production and pretty much all of the ‘sound’ is by the very talented Lindsay Martin; the spot on drumming by Danny Glasgow; the inspiring sax of Mel Wishart;  the sublime vocals of Denise Thomas, David Beniuk, Malika Elizabeth and Jen Davis; and the beautiful second acoustic guitar, also by David.

If you know my early albums or Money Killed Jonny then On the Wings of a Wild Thing isn’t something you would expect. It goes back to the work I did in the 90s with the inspiring Peter Knox. The result was Big Blue Bus , a three piece garage band with drums, bass and guitar playing raw 70’s psychedelic soul. Peter was better known as Izzy Foreal, and passed away in 2014.

There’s also the connection with Denise Thomas and David Beniuk. I’ve performed countless gigs with these very talented and versatile musicians over the years in Wollongong and in Sydney, and they are the core inspiration of what is a vibrant, independent, and original folk scene in Wollongong.

The songs are quite new having been written in the six months before recording began. The only exception was Headphones, which I wrote with my brother David Robinson in the late 90’s. Somehow the song elluded recording and it was in an attempt to get David into a studio on a rush trip from Brisbane that instigated working with Danny to get the rhythm down for it.

Always is the most recent song and was written after recording began. To me it had a Burt Bacharach feel and I thought it would nice to take the psychedelic band theme into a minimalist songwriter mode.
